You can decide whether your bedding should feel silky and smooth, crisp and cool, or warm and cosy.  bed linen fabric and weave will suit you best.

THE FABRIC / FIBRE

bed linen will be the fabric or fibre used. Each fabric has its own feel and characteristics.

bed linen. Cotton is naturally breathable and biodegradable. It feels great on the skin. There are many varieties of cotton. Supima and Egyptian cotton are the best quality cottons.

bed linen the world over and it’s our favourite!  Bed linen made from Egyptian cotton is strong, light and breathable. The great thing about Egyptian cotton is the way it feels. It gets better with every wash.

Egyptian cotton is derived from Gossypium Barbadense, a different type of cotton than regular cotton. This gives it superior and unique properties. Extra long fibres in Egyptian cotton produce threads or yarns with a thinner, smaller diameter and stronger fiber than other cottons. The threads can be weaved into a durable, luxurious fabric unlike any other cotton.

Bed linen described as ‘luxe’ or ‘hotel quality’ is not necessarily made from Egyptian cotton. On the packaging or care label, look for the symbol of Egyptian Cotton authenticity.

SUPIMA/PIMA COTTON – The USA created Suima (or Pima) cotton to compete with Egyptian cotton. It is grown in the USA. It is similar to Egyptian cotton and made from long staple fibres which give the cotton its premium qualities.

BRUSHED COTTON/FLANNEL – Brushed Cotton is made from loosely spun cotton. The fabric has been carefully brushed to give it a soft, fuzzy, raised texture that holds in body heat. This creates a fabric that is warm and breathable, while still being cosy.

Although brushed cotton is also known as flannel, or flannelette it can be called flannel. Brushed cotton fabric is only brushed on one side. Flannel and Flannelette fabric are brushed on both ends.

POLYCOTTON – Polycotton sheets, also known as ‘easy-care’ sheets, are made from a mix of cotton and man-made polyester (a kind of plastic). Polycotton bedding linen is inexpensive and easy to maintain. It is easy to wash and dry quickly.

It lacks the luxurious top-quality feel of other fabrics. It’s also not as breathable than natural fibres like cotton or linen. This makes it a poor choice for people who suffer from night sweats and hot sleepers.

Polyester is made from a petroleum chemical and therefore cannot be biodegradable as natural untreated fabrics. Polyester can also shed plastic microfibres during washing, which could end up in our rivers or seas.

Linen is made from the natural long, hollow fibres of the flax plant. Most flax is grown in Europe. Flax from France and Belgium are generally of the highest quality.  linen bedding range is made from French flax.

Linen has natural breathability and insulation properties and therefore, offers excellent temperature regulation all year round.  linen bedding is really long-lasting.

It is naturally eco-friendly, biodegradable, and renewable.

linen may not initially feel as soft as cotton, it does get softer with each wash.  linen if you want that softer feel straight away.

linen has been garment washed in small batches to relax the fibres, resulting in Silk sheets feel really smooth and luxurious against the skin.  Silk bedding is made from the cocoons of silk spun by silkworms.  silk is breathable and wicks moisture away from your skin to help keep you cool as you sleep.  silk has anti-bacterial properties.

silk has beauty benefits.  silk help care for your skin. Silk is able to retain more moisture than other fabrics, and it also makes it less likely for hair to be pulled at while you sleep. This should result in a more even complexion and less knotty hair.

Silk bedding and sheets can be more difficult to maintain as they may need to be washed by hand and dried. Silk sheets and bedding can wrinkle easily and are difficult to iron. It’s a labor of love for your beauty rest!

Sateen weave sheets feel soft, slightly silky and luxuriously smooth so this weave is often used in luxury Sateen sheets have a slightly warmer feel than percale.  Egyptian cotton bed linen.

PERCALE – Percale is a tightly weaved weave that makes percale sheets feel cool and crisp. Percale fabric can either be made with pure cotton or a mixture of cotton and Polyester.

TWILL – This twill weave produces bed linen with a diagonal design that has a distinct textured herringbone appearance. Twill bed linen is known to be soft and drapey (the way it hangs).

JACQUARD – This weaving technique was invented by Joseph Jacquard in 1804. To weave a pattern into fabric, a special loom can be used.

WAFFLE – The yarns are woven in a honeycomb grid pattern with recessed squares. This results in a fabric with 3D and high texture.

JERSEY – Jersey bed sheets are made from the same knit cotton or cotton mixture as the t-shirt. They are soft and stretchy, but not very durable.

SATIN – Although a satin sheet can be made from silk, it is usually made of synthetic fibres that are tightly knitted or woven together. This synthetic fabric is smooth and inexpensive. It isn’t very durable and can be snagged easily.

MICROFIBRE-This synthetic fibre makes a soft, durable, and wrinkle-resistant fabric. It can feel warm and sweaty in hot temperatures due to its dense nature.

THREAD COUNT/GSM / MOMME

thread count in cotton or GSM in linen or Momme in silk. Although a high-quality fabric won’t be replaced by a poor one, it can make for great bedding.

Thread count is the measurement used in cotton materials. It is the number of threads that are woven together in a square inch of material.  thread count.  thread count can make a difference to the smoothness, quality and feel of your sheets.

thread counts do exist. However, thread count is not the only indicator of quality bedding. Quality of the cotton threads used to weave the bedding is more important.  thread count sheets made from poor quality cotton.

thread count and above – anything less will wear badly, rip and develop holes! High thread counts (over 800) can result in stiff sheets and duvet cover that are difficult to iron and uncomfortable to sleep on.  thread count for our Linen is measured in GSM (grams per meter) and typically ranges from 100gsm to 200gsm. We use 150 GSM for our linen bedding range. Lower GSM was too thin, while higher GSM felt too heavy and rough.
