How to Keep your Hotel Linens White and Bright

Even if the linens have been washed and dried, they might not look like it. Your guests will expect white towels and sheets at a minimum. Hotel and motel owners must be careful about staining fabrics. Bleach can cause damage to fabric and could not be the best option for your facility. Bleach is not the only tool you have to combat those smears and tough spots. This is how to keep your skin spotless.

Pre-treat the stain

Hydrogen peroxide can be used to remove any visible stains. Allow it to soak into the fabric for at least one hour before you begin the wash.

Don’t overload

Don’t stuff the washer with so many items that it becomes clumpy. If fabrics are not allowed to move freely, the laundry will not get cleaned. This will make it difficult for stains to disappear. During the wash cycle, you want detergent evenly distributed across the laundry load. Overloading machines can cause them to wear faster and require more repairs.

Use a cold cycle to start or soak

Although it may seem tempting to use hot water to clean blemished fabric, high temperatures can cause many stains to set, especially those made of protein. It should take at least 5 minutes to cool the fabric.

Use alkaline detergent

Make sure your detergent has enough alkalinity. You can also add OxiClean to your detergent. This type of detergent will retain oil and grease more effectively, which will help keep your fabric from getting grayed.

Hot or warm water is used for main wash

You can increase the temperature for the main cycle after the initial cycle. You should use the highest temperature, but not too high. The type of fabric will determine how hot you can get. Fabrics made with polyester should be washed slightly hotter than 100% cotton.

Use vinegar for the rinse cycle

Add a quarter cup of white vinegar to the load once it reaches the rinse cycle.

Use bleach again

The 2nd wash can be used to bleach if it is needed. This is a common practice in hotels and it allows you to use bleach in a shorter cycle.

Clean the machines

Regularly clean your machines. Cleaner machines mean cleaner laundry. Wipe down your machine once a week with watered-down bleach or use vinegar and baking soda to clean it.

You might consider supplying makeup remover wiping

Pillowcases and towels stained by makeup and acne cream are two of the most common causes. Make it easy for your guests to clean up makeup by providing wipes.

While this may require some extra attention from staff, it will improve the longevity of your fabrics and laundry machine. It will also save you money on replacing or repairing linens. Clean white sheets will give your guests a positive impression of your hotel. Cleaning & Laundry is available to answer any questions you may have about your machines or help you to replace old machines. Give us a shout today!
